Magazine Cover Review

My first impressions on the magazines were the covers. Obviously, because that's the first thing everyone see's. It's how you draw attention. What I noticed was how they directed themselves towards certain audiences. All the different colors and pictures they would use for different ages and genders. For example with, Better Homes and Gardens. They use color fonts in big swirly letters with a picture of a house or food that looks nice. It's very pleasing to the eye but, that's not going to make a middle aged man buy it. The audience it's looking for is likely moms. It's marketing tips to lead a pretty and put together lifestyle. A teenage boy is not going to look at that. Another example of a magazine cover that does a good job at attracting a very specific audience is GQ. On the one we looked at in class Travis Scott was on the cover. He is a huge rapper in this generation and tons of teenagers listen to him. So right off the bat that's an immediate reaction and eye catcher to any young person. Travis was in the center of the page and there was red lighting on him with wavy words around him in a big blue font. Red and blue are two very aggressive colors so without even knowing who the cover is highlighting the colors together can draw somebody in very easily.

This is an example of the front cover of GQ magazine. Using a rapper many teenagers listen to as the highlight of the cover is a good way to attract them as an audience.

Another thing that stood out to me with the magazines were the advertisements. I think an advertisement cant really show what kind of magazine it is. For example, Vogue magazine. A lot of their advertisements showed top fashion brands or expensive jewelry. It's clear from these ads that Vogue is trying to attract preferable rich people with perhaps a good fashion taste. They also want the ads to reflect that on themselves. If the just put in any random small clothing store in their magazine it would make them seem like a less high class company compared to others. There's lot's of different things you can do to make a magazine stand out to people but reviewing these magazines made me realize that the hard part is attracting the right audience. You have to be educated in what those people want to see and read about.
